Agreed. I was one of the first teachers to ditch contest in order to do more project based and inquiry learning. During my career, we halved the content several times (in science) over a period of ten years. Many of our aspiring doctors and engineers who compete with peers in college and university programs are simply left in the dust. They don’t have a context of common knowledge with their peer group. And if they do make it through medical school, they are practicing with a very rudimentary understanding of the complexities of human systems. Yes, doctors have handheld computers to fill in gaps in their knowledge. But there is a point where we have gone too far and nobody knows anything. I fear we have reached that point in some cases.
